An age old adage, but sadly it’s no longer true.  Modern farming methods have all but destroyed the soil’s natural resources and the nutritional content of our present day fresh produce is simply not what it’s reported to be. In fact, each generation of this supposedly state of the art produce are less and less nutritious than its predecessors. (Click here for World Health Report)

The problem evidently lies squarely with the chemical fertilizers used in modern day farming, an artificial cow poop that does nothing moreplane-spraying than promote good looking, good tasting, fast growing  fruit and vegetables that are nutritionally depraved. Modern day fertilizers, unlike the natural composts of old, do nothing to promote ongoing healthy soil. They do not contain any of the decaying matter needed to maintain soil structure and so the necessary trace elements to produce quality and healthy foods are steadily depleted over time. Food is only as healthy as the soil it grows in!


The Worldwatch Institute  attest that studies concluded in 2003 show that despite farmers being able to grow crops 2 to 3 times faster than 50 years ago, their produce has 10 to 25 percent less copper, iron, zinc, protein, calcium, vitamin C and other nutrients. As at today’s date 13 years later (2016) this decline will no doubt be much worse.

Research by David Thomas – a geologist turned chiropractor, shows that super foods like Tomato and Broccoli contain 80% less copper and 75% less calcium than in 1940. Thomas cracked that ‘You’d have to eat 10 times more tomatoes today to enjoy the same copper intake from one tomato in 1940.’

This loss in nutritional value is sadly not only limited to fresh produce. The livestock industry has suffered the same fate. Specially formulated and chemically enhanced feed ensure that cattle, sheep, pigs and chicken are reared in double quick time, but once again at a cost to the consumer – less protein and nutrients than yesteryear.

Professor Michael Crawford and Yoqun Wang of London Metropolitan University found that our present day chickens contain twice as much fat, a third more calories and a third less protein than their counterparts in 1940.

There’s no doubt that our modern day, chemically enhanced, but nutritionally depleted foods have taken its toll and the imminent world food shortage forecast looks set to even further aggravate the problem.

So what is the answer?  After all, our daily nutritional intake is what sustains us and enables the proper functioning of our immune system to fight off infections, viruses, bacteria, parasites etc etc.  Ailments and sicknesses like Aids, Cancer, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Arthritis, Depression, Tumors, Diarrhea, Flues and Colds are more prevalent today than 40/50 years ago, attributed mainly to our weaker immune systems.

What are the options to restore your health?

Buying organic is one option, but despite being more nutritious it does have it’s own problems. It’s  expensive and not always freely available, unless of course you have the urge and oomph to grow your own produce. (see our info on Aquaponics)

Acid Reflux: A Disease of our Time

By my early 20’s I was addicted to Rennies, downing 3 or 4 at a time. Coughing, belching and burning was part of my daily routine. Whether I ate or not, I was always burning somewhere between my stomach and my tonsils.

Back in the 70’s Acid Reflux was an uncommon disease. Over the past 40 years it has increased almost 10 fold. General medical consensus is that if left unchecked it can develop into esophageal cancer . Sad to say, current research to find out the what, how and why is still in it’s infancy.

At the entrance to your stomach is a valve called Lower Esophageal Sphincter, or LES for short. It opens up to let through incoming food and then closes to prevent stomach gasses from sneaking back up through the Esophagus.

So what causes the reflux? Some of the common problems are;

Hiatal Hernia: When the stomach bulges up into the chest through the diaphragm.
Overeating and or lying down straight after a meal
Overweight: What else? It’s the reason for anything going wrong.
Snacking before bedtime.
Eating and drinking certain no-no foods and beverages, although the list is in a bit of a quandary since the Banting diet has started challenging traditional thinking.
Smoking: Surprise, surprise!


More often than not antacids and a lifestyle change will do the trick. Failing this, the next step is visiting your doc for prescription medication and ultimately a snip snap job.

One home remedy includes eating half an apple before bedtime every night. Apparently eating a small handful of almonds after every meal also helps the cause but there are no studies to support these easy-peasy remedies.

The low-carb ‘Banting’ diet certainly seems to be a popular choice. Studies have found that cutting back on refined carbohydrates helps to reduce acid.

What’s the verdict on my reflux? I can’t say really. Somewhere in my early 50’s I followed a mean detox diet for 30 days. I’m happy to report that my reflux disappeared together with a few kilos of fat. Haven’t felt or smelt it since.

Fact remains, Acid Reflux is no laughing matter and if a change in life style does not do it for you, you need to take some action.

Vicks Vaporub: It’s so much more

It conjures up vivid memories of my growing up in the 50’s & 60’s.

Things were a lot more simple then. Any sign of a cough or cold and ma soon had you rubbed from navel to nose with a healthy layer of Menthol Vicks Vaporub. Quite unlike today’s children who are unceremoniously doped with flue capsules and odorless cough mixtures.

Has Vicks lost its attraction?  Not by any means. For those in the know it’s a box of medical magic that works for a long range of aches and ailments. While many of these assertions have not yet been medically verified there certainly is no shortage of trustworthy testimonials from the many happy users.

Officially there are two recognized uses for Vicks Vaporub. It can be rubbed on the chest and throat to relieve coughs and nasal congestion and it can be applied to sore muscles to relieve minor aches and pains.

But then there’s this list of unofficial uses:

Coughing:  The causes are multiple and the the intensity varied, but bed time is when the onslaught begins. Medical science seemingly has numerous reasons for this exasperating occurrence, all of which require costly prescription drugs to treat.  

Rubbing the soles of your feet with Vicks and donning a pair of socks is apparently all that’s needed to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. There are numerous testimonies on the internet to support this.

Science is not clear on why this works, but then who cares. It brings relief to 1000’s and that’s all that matters.

Toe Nail Fungus:  A  common problem that can result in inflammation, swelling and  crumbling of the nail and is aggravated by a weak immune system, poor hygiene and exposure to moisture, like sweaty feet when wearing shoes and socks on a hot day.

A simple application of VapoRub on the infected nail 2 or 3 times a day will turn it dark as the Vicks starts killing of the fungus. As the nail keeps growing the dark part will grow off, leaving your toe fungus free. Apply Vicks Vaporub for a few more days to clean out any remaining bacteria.

Headaches:  Who would have believed. Vicks Vaporub is supposedly a cure for children’s blocked noses and wheezy chests and coughs caused by colds and flues.

Applying Vaporub to your temples and forehead with a dash or 2 under the nose is apparently all that’s needed to relieve a headache.

Does it work? I don’t know. I don’t get headaches, but yonks of testimonials on the internet from people of all walks of life suggests it does. As always, you have the skeptics, but then have they even tried it?

Let’s just agree that it works for some and not for others.

Tennis Elbow:  This has me totally amazed. Having suffered from this many years ago the ailment was only resolved after many doctor’s visits, numerous injections and boxes of pain killers. Now I’m told the matter could have been resolved by simply applying some Vicks Vaporub!

So I googled it and there it was. Numerous claims that Tennis Elbow vanished in days after regular applications of Vaporub. My gasp is flabbered.

And so the list continues. Mosquito bites, stretch marks, pet pee deterrent, Athlete’s foot, ear pain (apply to cotton wool in ear) and keeps cats from scratching furniture.

Arc eyes:  A tip from one of our readers. Wipe Vaporub under your eyes, let it go to work and before you know it the burn has gone. Make sure you don’t get it in your eyes. It will not help the cause.


Vicks Vaporub is strictly for external use only. Some people are sensitive to Vicks so if you are not sure, or never used it before, it’s always best to first test it on your skin.

Antacids and Stomach ulcers

Do they really do the job?

It’s another one of those confusing medical anomalies. Your stomach makes hydrochloric acid to aid digestion. It aggravates your ulcers and heartburn and so the nice doctor prescribes a quick-fix of antacids which stabilizes the acid and you feel better, until your next meal of course.

At least that’s what we’re told, however far from the truth it may be.

Cartoon sketches depicting someone salivating over a delicious plate of food is not very far from the truth. As you chew and chomp your food the enzymes in your saliva triggers the digestion process and prompts your stomach to release hydrochloric acid.

Swallowed food  passes down the esophagus into the stomach wherEsophacuse the gastric juices(acid) start breaking it down  in preparation for the next faze of digestion, the small intestines. To open the valve that allows the food to pass through to the intestines needs a high level of acidity. If this acid level is not correct the valve will not open.

And so the food lies in your stomach where it pollutes and releases gasses!

Contrary to all we are told the stomach needs a high level of acidity to maintain the healthy and effective functioning of the digestive system. The acid also destroys and prevents germs and parasites from invading your body. High acid level are thus indicative of a healthy stomach and no reason for concern, as we are always made to believe.

Put differently, a reduced asset level triggers the following problems:

* Insufficient breakdown of the food
* Insufficient acid level to regulate the valve to the small intestines
* Undigested food lying in your stomach longer than it should
* Breakdown of the acid protective barrier increasing the risk of harmful bacteria and toxins invading
* your stomach, resulting in ulcers.

The longer the food lies without digesting, the more it putrefies and ferments and the more gas it releases. Before long you start bloating, burping, passing winds and finally – heartburn, acid reflux and peptic ulcers. 

Taking antacids and other similar medication to reduce the acid levels in your stomach won’t solve anything, seeing that the problem is caused by low acid levels in the first place. Antacids only suppresses the symptoms. Once the effects of the medication wears off the pain and discomforts return in all it’s glory .

So what causes low acid levels, or Hydrochlorhydria as it is medically known.

Cracked Heels and Elbows

It’s painful, it’s yukky and can be a real headache to solve. Left untreated the most likely payoff is  inflammation, infection and bleeding. 

Walking barefoot, long periods of standing and obesity are the most common causes for this bothersome and embarrassing affliction. Cracked heels are unsightly and is often mistakenly attributed to lack of hygiene, but this cannot be more wrong.

Not surprisingly the desperate search for a practical quick fix has triggered a multi million dollar industry of ‘miracle’ creams and balms, each with a sure and trusted guarantee to bring instant relief and healing. Chances are that your sentiments will be no different. All I ask, is that you give it a go, because it works!!  I know, I suffered dry cracked heels and elbows for years and then someone showed me this simple trick.

A sheet of water sandpaper grade 100

No I’m not joking, you’ve heard right. After all, that’s what sandpaper does. It makes rough things smooth, like a baby’s bum.

Sand down the dry skin on your heals and albows until smooth and then only have your bath or shower as normal. Dry thoroughly and apply some foot cream. You will see a significant improvement after just 1 session. I know, because it worked for me.

So what’s the difference between sandpaper and a pumice stone.? Very simple. Rubbing away at your wet heels and elbows while under the shower or in a bath simply does not do the job nearly as well as sandpaper on dry skin.

And there it was. Starring us in the face all along!

A word of warning! Don’t get too carried away with the sanding down. You  don’t want to damage the new layer of skin, it can be pretty painful! Rather tackle it over 2 or 3 sessions, the results will still be spectacular!

Restless Legs Syndrome


Restless Legs Syndrome, or for short RLS.

Little is known about it. It has medical science befuddled and the natural functions of the body in disarray. Whilst melatonin from the brain is preparing the body for a night of fitful sleep your legs are planning a party of their own.

People suffering from RLS are driven by an unstoppable urge to keep moving their legs. This compulsion is often painful, and increases at night and when lying down. The end result is lack of sleep, and in severe cases, anxiety and depression.

Medical science admits that research into RLS is still in its infancy. Although many researchers believe that it’s linked to other serious conditions such as heart, lung, and kidney disorders, it seems to often be activated by something as simple as excessive caffeine or too little exercise.

Unless the RLS can be tied to an underlying sickness there simply is no medical cure for it. Prescribed medicines can at best only bring brief relief and often have side effects like dizziness, nausea and daytime sleepiness.

A change in lifestyle often produces the best results and watching what goes in and through the mouth is a good start. Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and sugar are big culprits.
Activities like stretching and hot or cold packs to the affected area are also said to bring relief but again, not everyone benefits from this.

Remedies 😄

As always, there are the regular weird and wonderful tales of the unexplainable miracle cures. Crazy as it seems, they come with loads of testimonies from lifelong sufferers, while there are many others that experienced no relief whatsoever.

Cures for Insomnia

sleeping-cat-bEver seen a cat with a sleep disorder? They close their eyes and straight off fall asleep. Now if  cats could talk and share their secret we’ll all no doubt will be purring with delight as we drift off to sleep, but that’s not going to happen.

Rumour has it that our predecessors slept longer than we do today, but then Thomas Edison invented the light bulb and the rest is history.

Ironically, Insomnia is a big nightmare. You hit the sack, exhausted and bleary eyed, but find yourself more wired and with-it than you’ve been all day. You roll and scratch and follow all the insomnia rules, still sleep evades you.

So what is the solution?

Medication?  Not always the best option. It often causes dependency and can even worsen the problem. Known side effects are daytime sleepiness, dizziness, sleep-walking and memory lapses. Insomnia is a sign of one or more medical conditions that can range from depression, to too much caffeine, to a mineral deficiency and taking prescription drugs only suppresses the symptoms but does not pinpoint the root cause.

Acclaimed health researchers Joan and Lydia Wilen are the authors of Chicken Soup and Other Folk Remedies. It’syellow-onion taken the internet by storm and one of their claims to fame is a strange home remedy that many swears is a winner.

If you follow the instructions you are sure to be blowing z’s within 15 minutes.

The miracle cure, believe it or not, is an onion and the instructions are easy as 1,2,3.

First peel then cut the onion into chunks, place in a jar with a lid and next time you can’t sleep simply take 4 or 5 deep whiffs and wait for Mr. Sandman.

How does it work? Best not to ask because nobody knows. Insomnia is a common ailment in the celebrity community and sniffing onion is a solution many of them swear by. The only criteria is it must be of the ‘yellow’ variety which  is the one most commonly used and can be easily identified by the brown outer skin.

Treating ADHD the Natural way

ADHD, a controversial subject with 2 sharply divided groups – for and against.

My purpose for this blog is not to choose sides or play umpire. Even the most ardent skeptic will agree that children (and grownups) diagnosed with ADHD display symptoms of being hyperactive, forgetful, impulsive, moody and easily distracted. It’s the tag of ADHD allotted to this group of symptoms that they object to. It simply lumps all sufferers together under one debility without giving any thought or consideration to underlying causes.

Cheat Days: Good or Bad

My doctor told me to stop my intimate dinners for four. Unless there are three other people – Orson Welles 😆

Let’s face it, losing weight is no breeze, despite all the pills, diet shakes and magic devices flooding the market. One of the more favourite and seemingly successful innovations of late has been the ‘cheat day’, a supposedly reward for sticking to the unpalatable task of dieting.

Cheat day was never intended as a green light to pig out, yet not surprisingly, it’s viewed by many as exactly that. A big binge day, no holds barred. 

Scientists have now discovered that controlled and well planned ‘cheat day’ meals hold more benefits than simply a mental ‘lifter-upper’.

The logic is quite simple. The fat cells in your body secrete a hormone called Leptin, which is responsible for maintaining your body’s energy levels i.e. energy in = energy out. It does this by sending signals to the brain I’m hungry I need more energy OR I’m full I have enough energy.

To lose weight, energy out must exceed energy in which causes Leptin levels to drop, sending a message to the brain that more energy is needed. If this imbalance is maintained your body over time adjusts, going into  self preservation mode and slowing  down your metabolism so as to use less energy.

Obviously a Bad idea for weight loss. 😟

Cheat days trick the body into thinking that all is well!  You’re still taking in sufficient nutrition and energy levels are perfectly balanced.

The emphasis is on controlled and well planned cheat day meals, for one day of the week only. Without needing to feel guilty or condemned, it’s a day you can happily munch on the foods that are otherwise excluded from your diet. The secret is not to binge and but stick to regular portions. Eating ice cream and choc chip cookies is all par for the course. Gorging them down in mass quantities on auto pilot will only undo all the good you’ve done in the week.

There’s a condition though! Cheating is only for those who ‘did good during the week’, for those who have earned it. The theory only works if you didn’t cheat. It’s a reward to yourself for sticking to your healthy eating plan.    

As with all things weird and wonderful there are also the anti-cheat day proponents. One theory is that pigging out on junk food will only feed your addiction and set you up for failure. If you do have this problem Cheat Days will obviously not work for you.

Until proven otherwise I’ll go with the cheat day theory. Eating food on the no-no list without feeling guilty sounds just great to me.
